Car keys stopped being pieces of cut metal decades ago. A modern key carries a transponder chip the immobilizer has to recognise, a remote board for locking and unlocking, and sometimes a proximity antenna that lets the car start without the key leaving your pocket. Ignition repair and key extraction
When a key turns in the door but not the ignition, the wear is usually in the ignition cylinder itself. Worn wafers, a bent key, or debris inside the cylinder can all stop rotation, and forcing it snaps the key or the tumbler. ·Can you make a car key if I have lost every copy?
Yes, on most vehicles. With proof of ownership and the VIN, a key can be originated from scratch: the blade is cut to code or from the door lock, and the electronics are then programmed to the immobilizer. Some newer models with locked-down security systems have to go through a dealer, and you will be told that before work starts rather than after.
